VOD stands for video on demand: a library of films and series you start whenever you want, instead of waiting for a broadcast time. It is the opposite of live TV, where the schedule decides what is on. On an IPTV service the two sit side by side in the same app — 4KUSATV carries 150,000+ movies and series alongside its live channels.

What the letters mean

V-O-D is simply video on demand. "On demand" means the viewer chooses the moment: you press play and the video starts, pauses when you pause and resumes where you left it. You will also see it written as VoD, and a single item in the library is sometimes called "a VOD" — most often for a recording of something that was originally streamed live.

The kinds of VOD you will see named

  • SVOD — subscription video on demand: one fee, watch anything in the library. Most streaming apps work this way.
  • AVOD — advertising-supported video on demand: free to watch, paid for by ads.
  • TVOD — transactional video on demand: you rent or buy a single title.
  • Catch-up or replay — a live broadcast made available for a limited window after it airs. It behaves like VOD but is tied to a channel.

What VOD looks like inside an IPTV app

Open a player such as TiviMate or IPTV Smarters Pro and you normally get three sections: Live TV with the channel guide, Movies, and Series. The last two are the VOD library. Each title has a poster, a description and a resume position, and search works across the whole library rather than one channel at a time.

A VOD library loads from the provider each time the app refreshes, so a large library can take a moment to populate the first time you sign in.

What you need to watch VOD

  • A connection of roughly 11–18 Mbps per Full HD stream — the same as a live channel, since both are ordinary internet video
  • A device that runs a player app: a TV stick, Android or Google TV, Apple TV, a recent Samsung or LG smart TV, a phone, tablet or computer
  • Enough headroom on your line if someone else is streaming at the same time; each simultaneous stream needs its own share

How VOD fits into a subscription here

There is no separate VOD fee. A 4KUSATV subscription includes 22,000+ live channels and 150,000+ movies and series on the same login, with 4K UHD on selected titles and Full HD as the default. The free 24-hour trial includes the VOD library, which is the quickest way to see whether the titles you want are actually in it.

Questions about this page

What does VOD stand for?

Video on demand. It means a library of films and series you can start at any time, rather than programmes that air at a fixed hour.

What is a VOD?

A single item in an on-demand library — one film, one episode, or a recording of something that was originally streamed live. The plural, "VODs", is common for archived live streams.

What does on demand mean?

That the viewer chooses when to watch. You press play when it suits you, and you can pause, rewind and resume, which is not usually possible with a live broadcast.

What is the difference between VOD and live TV?

VOD lets you pick the moment and the title; live TV follows a schedule set by the broadcaster. VOD suits films and box sets, live TV suits sport, news and events where being late spoils it.

What are SVOD, AVOD and TVOD?

SVOD is subscription video on demand — one fee for the whole library. AVOD is advertising-supported and free to watch. TVOD is transactional: you rent or buy one title at a time.

Is VOD the same as catch-up TV?

Not quite. Catch-up is a live broadcast made available for a limited window after it airs, so it is tied to a channel and expires. A VOD title sits in the library and stays there.

Do I need a separate subscription for VOD?

Not with an IPTV service. A 4KUSATV subscription includes the live channels and 150,000+ movies and series on the same login, and the free 24-hour trial includes the library.

If you want to try IPTV rather than read about it, the 24-hour trial needs no payment card and runs the full service on a device you already own.
